The Tropical Biopharmaca Research Center (TropBRC) LRI-PGKH IPB University proudly commemorates Youth Pledge Day 2026 this Wednesday, October 28. This year marks the 98th anniversary of the historic Sumpah Pemuda, which was originally declared in 1928. For this commemoration, the Ministry of Youth and Sports of the Republic of Indonesia (Kemenpora) established the official national theme, “Patriotik, Gigih, Berempati: Pemuda untuk Indonesia” (Patriotism, Perseverance, Empathy: Youth for Indonesia). Consequently, this occasion serves as a profound momentum to reflect on national unity, creative collaboration, and youth resilience in facing modern challenges.

The History and Significance of Youth Pledge Day 2026

The historic pledge did not emerge instantly, but rather through a long consolidation process among regional youth movements during the Dutch East Indies colonial era. Initially, the First Youth Congress took place from April 30 to May 2, 1926, in Jakarta. This gathering laid a vital foundation by strengthening relations among regional organizations, including Jong Java, Jong Sumatranen Bond, and Jong Celebes.

Building on this early progress, the Indonesian Students Association (PPPI) initiated the Second Youth Congress on October 27 and 28, 1928. Participants convened across three different locations in Jakarta. The first session occurred at the Katholieke Jongenlingen Bond Building, while the second meeting took place at the Oost Java Bioscoop. Finally, delegates held the third session and closing ceremony at the Indonesische Clubgebouw, a house owned by Sie Kong Lian at Jalan Kramat Raya No. 106, which now operates as the Youth Pledge Museum.

During the closing night on October 28, 1928, delegates officially proclaimed the pledge. They firmly declared one motherland of Indonesia, one Indonesian nation, and one unifying language, Bahasa Indonesia. At this exact historical moment, Wage Rudolf Supratman performed the national anthem, Indonesia Raya, for the very first time on the violin.

Today, TropBRC IPB University align with a shared national vision to strengthen unity and leadership in national development. By honoring Youth Pledge Day 2026, the institution actively encourages the emergence of creative, innovative, and competitive young leaders who remain persistently dedicated to advancing the nation’s overall progress.
