On Friday, August 21, the Biopharmaca Conservation and Cultivation Unit (UKBB) at IPB University hosted a special international delegation. Organized by the Directorate of International Education (DPI) IPB University, this event brought together a diverse group of students. Participants included scholars from the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology (TUAT), Universitas Indonesia (UI), and various international students currently studying at IPB.
This visit gave participants a unique opportunity to explore the rich diversity of Indonesian medicinal plants. Throughout the activity, students toured the UKBB facility to observe various botanical collections firsthand.
Instead of just listening to lectures, the students engaged in a hands-on tour. Therefore, they could easily learn about the physical characteristics, biodiversity, and cultivation practices of Indonesia’s native biopharmaca.
Following the garden tour, the exploration continued with an introduction to simplisia. Simplisia refers to natural raw materials derived from plants, which people commonly prepare for herbal and medicinal purposes.
By examining these samples directly, the participants gained a much closer understanding of traditional medicine. Moreover, they learned exactly how researchers process these valuable natural resources for modern applications.
Naturally, these practical activities sparked lively and interactive discussions among the delegates. Participants actively exchanged scientific insights regarding Indonesian medicinal plants. They covered various critical topics, including:
– Potential health benefits
– Sustainable cultivation methods
– Conservation challenges
– Advanced processing techniques
Furthermore, this discussion provided a valuable space for students from different academic and cultural backgrounds to connect deeply with Indonesia’s botanical heritage.
The Manager of UKBB, Taopik Ridwan, S.T.P., M.Si., along with his dedicated team, warmly welcomed the delegation. The hosts guided the students throughout the day and happily shared practical insights into medicinal plant utilization.
Ultimately, this activity went far beyond a standard facility tour. It served as a dynamic platform for academic exchange and cross-cultural learning. By welcoming both national and global students, UKBB IPB University continues to share vital knowledge about the potential of Indonesian medicinal plants while fostering meaningful connections within the global scientific community.
