Citizens across the country celebrate National Batik Day 2026 today. This event honors an iconic traditional textile. UNESCO officially designated it as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. They made this historic decision on October 2, 2009. The Tropical Biopharmaca Research Center (TropBRC) LRI-PGKH IPB University proudly joins this event. The center views it as a vital milestone. This celebration helps preserve Indonesia’s national identity.
The History of National Batik Day 2026 and TropBRC’s Motif
This national celebration has deep historical roots. Indonesia’s founding father, President Soekarno, first promoted batik internationally. Decades later, the Indonesian government sought official UNESCO recognition. They submitted a formal application on September 4, 2008. The cultural body ratified this status in Abu Dhabi. This occurred during the 4th session of the Intergovernmental Committee. Batik then joined other esteemed Indonesian cultural treasures. These include the wayang, keris, noken, and the Saman dance.
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono cemented this historic date shortly after. He issued Presidential Decree (Keppres) Number 33 of 2009. Now, the government encourages institutions to wear batik every October 2.
TropBRC IPB University released a special banner for this year. It highlights an exclusive design called Batik Jagad Temulawak. This motif perfectly merges botanical heritage with deep cultural philosophy.
The unique design features three main symbolic elements. First is the temulawak (Java turmeric) plant with a lumpang-alu. This traditional mortar and pestle represent making traditional jamu. Second is the jagad (globe) motif. It highlights the growing worldwide recognition of jamu. Jamu is now seen as a valuable global health asset. Finally, the design includes the classic Sekar Jagad pattern. It symbolizes the beautiful diversity of ethnicities and cultures. They all remain harmoniously united within the Republic of Indonesia.
TropBRC IPB University proudly champions tropical biopharmaceutical research. The center also supports preserving traditional textile art. Citizens are encouraged to wear their batik with pride today. Together, we honor Indonesia’s natural and cultural heritage globally.
